==================Investigative Journalism Award Animal Welfare ==========

For 2004, Friends of Sound Horses (FOSH) has established $5,000 in award monies to recognize and encourage journalists to investigate the illegal and cruel practice of "soring." Soring is the application of chemical or mechanical means to enhance a horse's gait in an effort to win in "big lick" show ring competitions. FOSH is a national leader in the fight against abuse and soring of Tennessee Walking Horses and in the promotion of natural, sound gaited horses.


Eligibility
The award is open to all journalists: professional, freelance or student for works originally published or broadcast in 2004.

Award
First Place: $3,000 Second Place: $1,500 Third Place: $500

Media
Print media such as an article/feature in a newspaper, magazine or journal; visual broadcast media such as films, documentaries or videos; and on-line media are all eligible.

Deadlines
Entries must be originally published/broadcast in 2004 and received by FOSH by November 1, 2004.

General Entry Rules
Entries must be submitted on a completed official entry form, with the accompanying print, video/DVD or on-line media.

Selection
Judging will be based upon the award criteria. FOSH may not present awards if the criteria are not met.

Award Criteria
" Impact the media event/ story had on the public including circulation exposure
" Coverage that encouraged positive change and future decreases in soring
" Journalism excellence
