The best:

Best search tools:

  • GoogleNews The best search engine on the web has rolled out a "beta" test version of an important new service for journalists -- a news search tool. You can read the last week's news by topic (World, Business, etc) or use the search box with the usual powerful Google accuracy.
  • Google News Archives News archive search provides an easy way to search and explore historical archives. You can search articles or a timeline of events and articles. Some of the results from various publications are free, others are not, but all provide helpful leads.
  • Google News Alerts are sent by email when news articles appear online that match the topics you specify. Instead of getting useless web pages you get only reliable news sources. You can ask for as many as you want and you can request they get sent once a day or as news happens. Using the advanced search function, you can even narrow your alerts to a single publication. Be sure to read the tips to find out how this is done.

  • Lexis Nexis News One of the most comprehensive news database services on the web, Lexis Nexis, is often too expensive for many journalists and freelancers. But this free news service offers a wide range of recent headlines, background stories, access to wire services and TV transcripts.
  • Yahoo News Search Yahoo's new tool for searching news doesn't have as many news sources as Google's 4,500 papers but it offers some special features. Tabs allow you to compare different news sources and you add some of your favourite sources. You can also click the purple icon or dashed line under bolded keywords in the news story to get more related news.
  • Yahoo Full Coverage Yahoo has retooled its news section. Its advantage is in the depth of its features, themes and backgrounds. A great way to get a dossier or background on a story you are working on.
  • AltaVista News
  • World News Com
  • WorldPress.org World Press is an automated headline service, updated every 15 minutes, drawn from a sampling of newspapers and magazines worldwide. Its main adavnatge is that the selection is more diverse than the usual fare you find on Google News or other popular news sites. It also offers a free email service to keep you up-to-date with the latest news from thousands of newspapers from around the world, free of charge.
  • Findory Like many web news tools, this website brings you news articles from thousands of worldwide sources. But what is different is that Findory adapts to show you interesting and relevant news based on your reading habits, in effect building a personalized newspaper for each reader. The more articles you click, the more the main page changes to suit your needs. What is also handy is that Findory stores the recent articles you have viewed and the news sources you visited.
  • AskJeeves - News  Ask Jeeves, the simple text search engine, also offers a decent news search tool. Once you get your results, you can also narrow down the search to news from the last day, week or month. The International  page also allows you to search for news from or about a country. Not as sophisticated as Google News, but you do get some surprising results.
  • MSN Newsbot The UK version of MSN offers news from several countries in several languages - French, Italian, Spanish -- and easy access to world news.
  • IHaveNet World News One of several websites that use the Moreover newsfeed, this site has the advantage of giving you easy access to news from dozens of countries listed on the left-hand side of its page. You can also find business news by subject, as well as other topics such as Health and Entertainment.

New generation of news clustering tools:

  • Columbia Newsblaster Columbia University has come up with a better way to search the news - instead of just a mish mash of headlines. Every night, the system crawls a series of Web sites, downloads articles, groups them together into "clusters" about the same topic, and summarizes each cluster. The end result is a Web page that gives you a sense of what the major stories of the day are, so you don't have to visit the pages of dozens of publications.
  • NewsInEssence is one of the new "clustering" tools, this time developed by the University of Michigan. It tries to find and summarizing clusters of related news articles from multiple sources on the Web, including the CBC, CNN, and the International Herald Tribune. You can create your own clusters as well.
