  • Pick of the week August 3, 2008: BBC In depth Dozens of BBC news dossiers from 1998 to the present. An excellent way to get background, leads and timelines on major stories. For similar resources, see JNet's News pages.

  • Pick of the week July 27, 2008: BlogPulse A blog search engine that also analyzes and reports on daily activity in the blogosphere - with features to track trends, compare blogs on up to three topics and rank the blogs. For similar resources, see JNet's Blogs page.

  • Pick of the week July 20, 2008: News Voyager A quick listing of all American newspapers by state; foreign listings are by country alone - not broken down by regions as some of the more sophisticated directories (like ABYZ and KidonMedia).   • Pick of the week July 13, 2008: Down for everyone - or just me? How often have you come across a web site that seems to be out of operation, but you are not sure if the problem lies with your web connection or the target site? “Down for everyone, or just me?” lets visitors type in a Web address and see whether a site is generally inaccessible or whether the problem is with their own connection.   • Pick of the week July 6, 2008: The Institute for Middle East Understanding A California-based non-profit provides journalists with quick access to information about Palestine and the Palestinians -- frequently not heard in the West -- as well as expert sources, both in the U.S. and the Middle East.   • Pick of the week June 22, 2008: Snoop Station If you want to see if someone has a criminal background, the sections will include categories such as: public court records, sex offender registry entries, inmate/prison databases, wanted criminal listings, and so on.   • Pick of the week May 25, 2008: Google Sites Working on a complicated team story that requires cooperation from people scattered acroiss the country or the globe? This free service from Google allows to easily set up secure web sites -- you can control who has access and who does not - -so that a group of people at the same time can share documents, look at pictures or go over drafts of articles.   • Pick of the week May 18, 2008: IGoogle Why settle for a Google search page like everyone else when you can personalize your own page - -with news headlines you choose, weather, maps, even games.   • Pick of the week May 11, 2008: Xobni Xobni ("inbox" spelled backwards and pronounced zob-nee) is a free downloadable software that indexes all your e-mail in Outlook. Then it not only makes those messages searchable, but when you click on an email sender, it also shows you that person's previous emails, who else they connect to in your Contacts list and how they rank in your list of people you email.   • Pick of the week May 4, 2008: JetEye Jeteye is the "better bookmarking" tool for all Internet users — especially educators, guides and Internet researchers (teachers, students, designers, knowledge workers) — who need to easily save, browse and share their Internet library.Install the Jeteye “sidebar” for Firefox or Internet Explorer and create your own super powered bookmarks (Jetpaks) with drag & drop ease.Jeteye can be installed on all your computers — home, laptop and work — and your Jetpaks will always be available..   • Pick of the week April 27, 2008: Google Proximity Search Sometimes you need to find keywords right next to another word. For example, you want "global warming" and "automobiles" near each other in a sentence so you know the web page is relevant to your search. This nifty tool allows you to make sure your chosen keywords are within one to three words apart. For similar tools, see JNet's Google Page

  • Pick of the week April 20, 2008: Firefox ScreenGrab When you're doing web research, sometimes you have to be sure to grab a copy of a web page you have found -- it case it disappears later. If you use Firefox -- and click here to see why you should use this much superior browser -- this ScreenGrab extension is a must. Alternatively, Snagit is an inexpensive but versatile tool that lets you grab screen images, parts of web pages or the entire web page. For similar tools, see JNet's Tools Page

  • Pick of the week April 13, 2008: DomainTools is one of many sites that allow you to trace who owns a web page. To find out how to find out who is behind a web page, read this article from JNet's Tips Page.

  • Pick of the week April 6, 2008: Google News Timeline If you're a regular fan of Google News, click on Archive News Search and then, when you enter your keywords, select "Timeline." This will give you results along with a sliding timeline: you can select a year or month to narrow down your news archive search to a particular time period.   • Pick of the week March 30, 2008: Google Experiments Why settle for results in Google the way everyone else gets them? Here you can pick and sign up for one of several "Alternative views" of your Google results -- a timeline, a map, or in context of other information typessuch as key dates, locations and measurements.   • Pick of the week March 23, 2008: Psiphon allows you to help journalists or anyone else in countries facing Internet censorship. This free software turns your home computer into a personal, encrypted server capable of retrieving and displaying web pages anywhere. It is a human rights software project developed by the Citizen Lab at the Munk Centre for International Studies.

  • Pick of the week February 24, 2008: The Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) provides American data gathering and research with comprehensive information about staffing, spending, and enforcement activities of the U.S. federal government.   • Pick of the week February 10, 2008: Canadian JSource Pathfinders and American IRE Beat Sources. These two resource sites from a Canadian and American media organization provide extensive lists of websites, sources and contacts organized by beats and themes.   • Pick of the week February 3, 2008: The BigThink Often called the "thinking person's YouTube" this engaging new website offers topical interviews with experts on a variety of fields -- everyone from Kenneth Roth of the Human Rights Network to a US Supreme Court associate Justice.
