Pick of the week April 27, 2008: Google Proximity Search Sometimes you need to find keywords right next to another word. For example, you want "global warming" and "automobiles" near each other in a sentence so you know the web page is relevant to your search. This nifty tool allows you to make sure your chosen keywords are within one to three words apart. For similar tools, see JNet's Google Page
Pick of the week April 20, 2008: Firefox ScreenGrab When you're doing web research, sometimes you have to be sure to grab a copy of a web page you have found -- it case it disappears later. If you use Firefox -- and click here to see why you should use this much superior browser -- this ScreenGrab extension is a must. Pick of the week April 6, 2008: Google News Timeline If you're a regular fan of Google News, click on Archive News Search and then, when you enter your keywords, select "Timeline." This will give you results along with a sliding timeline: you can select a year or month to narrow down your news archive search to a particular time period. For similar tools, see JNet's Google Page
Pick of the week March 30, 2008: Google Experiments Why settle for results in Google the way everyone else gets them? Here you can pick and sign up for one of several "Alternative views" of your Google results -- a timeline, a map, or in context of other information typessuch as key dates, locations and measurements. Pick of the week March 23, 2008: Psiphon allows you to help journalists or anyone else in countries facing Internet censorship. This free software turns your home computer into a personal, encrypted server capable of retrieving and displaying web pages anywhere. It is a human rights software project developed by the Citizen Lab at the Munk Centre for International Studies.

These two resource sites from a Canadian and American media organization provide extensive lists of websites, sources and contacts organized by beats and themes. Pick of the week February 3, 2008: The BigThink Often called the "thinking person's YouTube" this engaging new website offers topical interviews with experts on a variety of fields -- everyone from Kenneth Roth of the Human Rights Network to a US Supreme Court associate Justice.
