  • Pick of the week October 14, 2007: WikiScanner This increasingly popular tool quickly identifies the source of millions of Wikipedia edits. A way to find out who is doing the re-writing, sometimes of their own entires.

  • Pick of the week Sept 30, 2007: Omgili is a specialized search engine that scans millions of online discussions worldwide in over 100,000 boards, forums and other discussion based resources.   • Pick of the week Sept 16, 2007: TV Guide's Online Video Guide This search engine focuses just on professionally produced video content, so you don't get the usual YouTube irrelevancies.   • Pick of the week Sept 9, 2007: Rollyo Rollyo allows you create your own personal search engines. All you have to do is pick the sites you want to search -- for example, your favourite media or news sources -- and they create a custom search engine for you that returns results only from those pages.   • Pick of the week Sept 2, 2007: Labourstart.org For Labour Day, this is a good place to get international news and analysis on the labour movement, provided by a global network of volunteers. For similar tools, see JNet's NewsTools

  • Pick of the week August 26, 2007: Global Integrity Investigating corruption at home or abroad? The Global Integrity Report, provides original, in-depth national assessments combining journalistic reporting with 292 "Integrity Indicators" analyzing openness, governance, and anti-corruption measures for many countries around the world.   • Pick of the week August 19, 2007: Project J-Source.ca A joint project involving eleven (and counting) journalism schools plus the Canadian Association of Journalists. Funded and administered by the Canadian Journalism Foundation, this site offers great research tips, education tips and advice on everything from ethics to Access to Information.   • Pick of the week August 12, 2007: NewsVoyager.com Hosted by the Newspaper Association of America, this site offers you quick access to local papers in the 50 American states.   • Pick of the week August 4, 2007: Find News By Category A quick index of news stories by category. The world section in particular can be helpful to find stories by region. The results list does not show the sources, so you have to click to find out what media broke the story, but you do get the most recent headlines from around the world.   • Pick of the week July 29, 2007: Real Radio News Search A helpful list of the top radio news stations that offer webcasts. For similar tools, see JNet's Radio page.

  • Pick of the week July 15, 2007: Reporters Edge.com A web-based people finder for journalists, designed by a former journalist. It's pay-per-use -- but with no sign up or subscrition fees and dirt cheap: as little as $5 for a US-wide criminal records search. For similar tools, see JNet's US Criminal Databases.

  • Pick of the week July 8, 2007: BBC's Quick Guides From the world's top news organization, quick easy guides to major topics from Afghanistan to sex trafficking. For other resources, see JNet's News page.

  • Pick of the week July 1, 2007: Authoratory An excellent way to find scientific and other experts. Full text search of close to 300,000 leading scientists. you can also use the "+" sign in the search box to narrow down your search - for example "aids + harvard + africa" to narrow down a university and a topic.   • Pick of the week June 24, 2007: PageBull A novel way to look at your search results - literally. PageBull displays the results in windows -- you can choose how many -- so that you can quickly see what the web page looks like and decide if it is what you want.   • Pick of the week June 17, 2007: Eyes On Darfur Amnesty International's project uses high-resolution satellite imagery to provide evidence of the atrocities being committed in Darfur -- "allowing people around the world to literally "watch over" and protect twelve intact, but highly vulnerable, villages." as AI says on its website.   • Pick of the week June 10, 2007: Kurt Schork Awards in International Journalism The deadline for entries is June 15. Two annual prizes of $5,000 each are awarded, one to any freelance print-based journalist covering foreign news, and the second to a local journalist in the developing world. The awards were created to honour Kurt Schork, the American freelance reporter known for his committed reporting around the world, who was killed in a military ambush while on assignment for Reuters in Sierra Leone in May 2000.The awards are being administered by the Institute for War & Peace Reporting.   • Pick of the week May 13, 2007: Liveleak In the wake of the US military's crackdown on blogs and YouTube videos produced by armed forces personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan, Liveleak keeps up a steady supply of raw footage -- from military people, insurgents, you name it.   • Pick of the week May 6, 2007: Livesearch from AlltheWeb All The Web is one of the Google competitors that does a decent job, allowing you to search for news, audio and video.   • Pick of the week April 8, 2007: Dotso Read a dozen top American and world news sites - -from the BBC to the New York Times to Reuters -- without having to leave this single web site. A click on each media outlets gets you a list of their top news stories, conveniently divided by themes. Great for fast browsing without wasting time jumping from site to site.
